Students of the Fisheries Diploma Institute in Gopalganj organized a sit-in protest on Monday, demanding action on five key issues. They locked the administrative building, boycotted classes, and exams, and blocked the principal and teachers from entering.
The protest began around noon in front of the administrative building, where students chanted slogans in support of their demands. Student leaders, including Ashiqur Rahman Khan, Md. Abu Saleh Sihab, and Pata Roy, addressed the crowd, stating that they would continue their protest until their five-point demands were met.
The students' demands include amending the recruitment rules from 2020, ensuring single appointments for diploma holders in specific job roles, and aligning job qualifications with the admission standards for diploma holders. They also want guaranteed appointments for diploma holders as sub-assistant fisheries officers at the 10th grade, similar to agricultural positions. Additionally, they are calling for quicker recruitment processes in the fisheries field and opportunities for diploma holders to work as assistant scientific officers and junior instructors in various research institutes under the Ministry of Animal Resources.
Principal Sazder Rahman of the Gopalganj Fisheries Diploma Institute acknowledged the students' concerns, stating that their demands have been communicated to higher authorities. He expressed support for their issues but criticized the protest tactics, emphasizing that blocking access and cutting off utilities is not the appropriate way to address their concerns.
The students remain determined to pursue their demands until they are met, and their protest highlights the urgent need for dialogue on these important issues.
