Four renowned doctors of Bangladesh from four leading medical colleges in the country were invited to join two separate conferences scheduled to be held in December in India.
One event ended on Tuesday (December 12, 2023), while the other one will start today (Wednesday) and will end before December 18. Three of the four medical professors were supposed to join the conference that ended on December 12, but got permission (GO) from the authorities concerned after the event ended.
Medical Education & Family Welfare Division of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare issued the government order (GO) about the four doctors’ tour to India.
The notification regarding the GO on four doctors’ joining conference in India was issued on December 12, the last day of the international event, signed by Shariful Islam, senior assistant secretary of Medical Education & Family Welfare Division (Admin-1).
According to the GO, the three medical professors have been granted government permission to stay in India for the ‘PACE Colorectal Surgical Workshop’ there from December 10 to December 13.
The three doctors are- Dr. Md. Nur Hossain Bhuiyan, a general surgery specialist and a professor at Department of Surgery of Dhaka Medical College; Dr. S.M. Quamrul Akther, a professor of Surgery at Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College; and Professor Dr. Mohammad Ashik Anwar Bahar, chairman of Surgery at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College.
These three doctors missed the international workshop in India as they got government permission after the end of the event. “We applied for the GO two months ago, but it has been issued after the time is over,” one of the doctors told the Daily Bangladesh Post.
On the other hand, another doctor has been granted permission to join a separate conference in India which will begin today (December 13) and will end before December 18. He is Dr. Md. Nurul Huda, professor of Nephrology at Chittagong Medical College. He is invited to join the Indian Society of Nephrology Conference-2023 in India. He is not joining the conference as there is not enough time for him to get prepared for the conference as the GO was issued at the eleventh hour.
When asked about the delay in the issuance of GO, Shariful Islam of the Medical Education & Family Welfare Division said, “Now I can’t make comment specifically about the delay is the issuance of GO as now (Tuesday evening) I am outside the office. However, I signed GO after the approval from the higher authorities.”
This reported contacted Professor Dr. Md. Nur Hossain Bhuiyan on the telephone on Tuesday evening for comment on the matter. He could not go to the workshop in India as he did not get the order in time. He was staying in Dhaka. However, he did not make any specific comment to the Daily Bangladesh Post on this matter. “I am at a salon now for hairstream. I am busy now. I will talk to you later,” he told this reporter of the Daily Bangladesh Post.
