Dhaka Metropolitan Police's (DMP) Traffic Division is working to find the possible path to ease city traffic as the capital was witnessing an unusual traffic congestion for the last few days following the heavy rainfall and other reasons.

"We are working to find possible solutions to reduce traffic congestion since the capital has been witnessing an acute traffic due to water-logging triggered by heavy rainfall in the last week as some of the city roads are damaged," said MdMunibur Rahman, deputy inspector general (DIG) of police and additional commissioner (traffic) of DMP.

The city witnessed severe traffic gridlock on the first day of this week on Sunday as the people, who left the city on weekend, returned and the hawkers opened their shops occupying the city streets, imposing an extra pressure on the roads, he added. After analyzing the Google Street Maps this evening, it was observed that the city roads from Gabtali to Shahbagh via Science Lab-Kalabagan, Kakrail Mosque to Farmgate, Kakrail to BijoySmarani overpass via Sat Rasta, Kakrail to Rampura and Basundhara to MerulBadda were facing vexing traffic congestion.

Besides, the pressure of vehicles on the dilapidated parts of the city roads creates traffic jam, causing suffering to the commuters, as the vehicles could not move smoothly at the damaged points, Munibur Rahman said.

"We are, however, working to take further steps to address the city traffic, considering that traffic congestion might be intensified in some spots after launching of the much-awaited metro rail service up to Motijheel, as the metro rail stations will witness huge crowd within a short frequency of time," he added.
