A devastating fire broke out at the furniture market, which has caused extensive damage at Mirkadim in Munshiganj in the wee hours of Sunday.
Sources said that the fire started at 12:30am on Sunday. The fire service brought the fire under control at 2:00am. The fire damaged furniture of Tk several crores. Locals said that the flames of a sudden fire were noticed in the mid night. The shops of the furniture market were burning one by one. Locals rushed to the furniture market. The market was one of the largest in the district.Firefighters had to work hard to put out the blaze with water from the Rekabi bazar canal. The heatwave also caused extensive damage to nearby markets. The intensity of the fire was so high that it was not possible to put out the fire immediately, sources said. Most of the businesses in the market were turned to ashes. Local businessman, freedom fighter Kamal Kamal Uddin Ahmed, said, “Some 13 shops were completely destroyed and four others were partially burnt. Initially, it is estimated that the loss is around several crores of Taka.” Munshiganj Fire Station Senior Station Officer Abu Yusuf said, “The exact cause of the fire could not be known initially.”
Locals said the fire started from a bamboo mat on the west side of the market. A total of three units of the firefighters brought the fire under control. Munshiganj Additional Superintendent of Police (Sadar Circle) Minhaj ul Abedin said, “Additional law enforcers have been deployed to protect the lives and property of the people.
