A fugitive accused in arms, snatching and robbery cases was killed during an alleged gunfight between police and robber gang at Fakirer Mor area in Naogaon's Porsha upazila on Tuesday morning.
The deceased was identified as Delwar Hossain Dukhu, 47, resident of Anatpur village under Porsha upazila. There were six arms, snatching and robbery cases lodged against him with Porsha and Sahapur police stations.
Officer-in-charge (OC) of Porsha Police Station Sahinur Rahman said Delwar Hossain Dukhu, a fugitive who received five years imprisonment in connection to a robbery case was arrested from Nitpur area of the upazila on Monday night.
Other members of his gang were carrying out a robbery in the Fakirer Mor area of the upazila on Tuesday morning. Police raided the area taking Dukhu with them on the basis of information provided by him during interrogation, he added.
Sensing the presence of the police at that time, his associates opened fire on the police. Then, police men also fired in self-defense. Delwar Hossain was allegedly shot dead in this gunfight. He was later rescued and taken to Porsha Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared him dead. Police have sent the body to Naogaon Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy, the OC said.
Naogaon Additional Superintendent of Police Rashidul Haque said Dolowar Hossain Dukhu, the leader of the inter-district robber gang, was a top listed criminal. During the gunfight, Dukhu's associates were able to escape from the scene.
