Frustration grips 80pc varsity students

Survey report says

About 80 percent of university students in the country are frustrated for various reasons, says a survey report of Aachal Foundation dealing with mental health and well-being of Bangladeshi people 

In a virtual press conference, Farzana Akter Laboni, research team leader of the Aachal Foundation, revealed the survey  report on June 6. 

At that time, Dr. Kamal Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury, professor of clinical psychology of Dhaka University; Obaidullah Al Marzuk, senior lecturer at the Department of Social Sciences and Humanities of the Independent University of Bangladesh; Abdullah Al Harun, project manager; and Tansen Rose, founder and president of the Aanchal Foundation were present.

Farzana said, “Frustration, anxiety and depression were observed among 79.80 percent of students of the universities. Being frustrated, most of the students take decision to commit suicide. 

She categorically added that there are many symptoms of frustration." Such as fatigue, weight loss, loss of enjoyment, changes in sleep patterns, suicidal thoughts, inability to concentrate on work, etc.

By mentioning the reason of frustration, she also said, "In the survey, they have found that the reason of 55 percent of students’frustration is the uncertainty of their future, 16 percent are frustrated for comparing themselves with others, 9.4 percent are frustrated for their study, 9 percent are frustrated for their residential halls, and 5.3 percent are frustrated because of bullying by the teachers and batch mates”.

Besides, based on the number of students in public and private universities who are more frustrated, they found that 83 percent students of public universities and 17 percent students of private universities are frustrated. 

In conclusion, she sorts out a solution to this problem and said, “By managing the counselling unit, increasing mental health-based seminars, appointing psychiatrists in schools, colleges, and universities, etc, we can keep our students away from frustration.

A total of 1570 students of 83 public and private universities virtually participated in the conference.
