Frontliners at high risk

Frontline fighters in the ongoing all-out war against the deadly corona virus, have been dying alarmingly for last few days. Public health experts warned that if the numbers of infected frontline warriors are continuously increased, the health systems of the country will be faced a terrible situation very soon.

They suggested to take extra measures to protect doctors, nurses, healthcare staff members, law enforcers, bankers and journalists, as they are in the frontline in combating the Covid-19.

Talking to The Bangladesh Post, Dr Nirupam Das, chief administrator of Bangladesh Doctors' Foundation (BDF) said, “According to our own statistics, around seven percent of total Covid-19 patients are doctors.”

Responding to another question, he further claimed that of total infected, more than 10 percent are healthcare staff members, which includes physicians, nurses and technicians also.

He said, “These infection rate is the highest in the world.”
“If we fail to provide quality PPEs to health professionals, the situation will get worsened. As a result, the health system of the country will face terrible situation,” he warned.

He also urged authorities concerned to ensure safety of other frontline fighters including police personnel.
Till Saturday, five police personnel were died while fighting against the corona virus.

Talking to The Bangladesh Post, Assistant Inspector General (AIG) of Police (Media and Public Relations) Mir Sohel Rana said, “Total 741 police personnel from different parts of the country were infected by COVID-19 till Saturday.”

However, the figure was 677 on Friday afternoon.
Of the total infected 741 police personnel, 358 are from the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).
AIG Sohel Rana said, “Besides, a good number of infected personnel are from Dhaka, Narayanganj and Gazipur districts.”
Some 57 were so far recovered among the infected police personnel, he stated.

Besides, 174 others are currently in isolation as they showed corona virus-like symptoms.
Total 1,250 who were in close contact with the infected people, have been put in quarantine.

According to the statistics of Bangladesh Doctors' Foundation, a total of 540 doctors were infected by COVID-19 till Saturday. Of them, 387 are from hospitals in Dhaka division while 57 are from Mymensingh. Fourteen are from several hospitals in Chattogram, 29 from Khulna, 10 from Barishal, six in Sylhet and seven are from Rangpur.

The rest are from different specialised hospitals.
However, eighteen physicians have recovered so far from Covid-19.

At least 40 journalists and three media employees were tested positive for Covid-19 until Wednesday.
Among them, one died while eight recovered.

Unverified sources claimed that more than thirty employees of different private and stated owned banks were infected with COVID-19 till Saturday. Among them, one died.

Mirza Golam Yahya, head of PR of the City Bank Ltd told this correspondent that except deceased Muztaba Shahriar, no one was infected in the bank.
He said, “We have taken necessary measures to protect our employees along with our clients.”
