Police personnel of Begumganj Police Station detained four robbers with firearms, lethal weapons and a CNG-run auto rickshaw used for robbery from several places of Begumganj in Noakhali on Tuesday.
The detainees are M Sumon, 38, M Syed Alam, 29, M Belal Hossain, 40 and Saiful Islam, 30.
Police sources said a robbery was held at the houses of Siraj Mia and Ruhul Amin Mia at Lakuria Kandi village under Begumganj Upazila of the district on May 16. Around 10-12 robbers snatched the valuables of Tk 18 lakh 76 thousand from their houses beating their family members. Members of Begumganj Police Station conducted a drive to nab the wrongdoers in this incident.
Sources said police personnel set up a check post in Sorugo Pool area on Feni-Laxmipur highway. Police signaled two rashly driven CNG-run auto rickshaws to stop. However, one of the vehicles did not stop and headed to Chaumohuni. Police personnel chased the another CNG-run auto rickshaw and nabbed the driver of the vehicle. Later, according to the tip-off the law enforcers detained others.
Noakhali Superintendent of Police (SP) Mohammad Asaduzzaman confirmed the matter to the media.
The detainees are professional robbers. They used to rob people in several upazilas of Noakhali and its adjacent areas, he added.
