Four more people have died from dengue in the last 24 hours till Sunday morning, bringing the total death toll from the mosquito-borne disease in Bangladesh to 214 this year.
In the same period, 660 new dengue patients were admitted to nationwide hospitals, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
Within Dhaka, 207 patients were hospitalised in areas under Dhaka North City Corporation, while 121 were admitted in Dhaka South.
In addition, 111 were hospitalised in the Dhaka Division, 32 in the Barishal Division, 57 in the Chattogram Division, 71 in the Khulna Division, 20 in the Mymensingh Division, 23 in the Rajshahi Division, 17 in the Rangpur Division and 1 in Sylhet Division.
As per the DGHS record, 14 people died in January this year, three in February, five in March, two in April, 12 in May, eight in June, 12 in July, 27 in August, and 80 in September. Since January 1, 2024, Bangladesh has reported a total of 42,470 dengue cases.
Last year saw the highest recorded number of deaths from the mosquito-borne disease, with 1,705 fatalities.
The DGHS also documented 321,179 dengue cases and 318,749 recoveries in 2023, making it the most severe dengue outbreak in the country’s history.
