Former State Minister for Primary and Mass Education Zakir Hossain was arrested from Mohammadpur area in the capital on Thursday. Detective Branch (DB) of police arrested him.
Zakir Hossain was accused in number of cases linked to the attack on the recent student-people movement.
He is accused of illegally occupying both private and government land by abusing his political power.
Several cases have been filed against him, said Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Deputy Commissioner (Media) Talebur Rahman.
Zakir Hossain, who served as the Member of Parliament for Kurigram-4, had collected nomination papers for the upcoming 12th national parliamentary election but did not submit them.
He is currently serving as the president of Rowmari upazila Awami League.
Locals have accused the former state minister of illegally occupying both private and government land by abusing his political power.
Party leaders and activists raised similar allegations during a press conference.
