Former planning minister Mannan freed on bail

Former planning minister MA Mannan was released on Thursday, a day after he secured bail in a case filed over attacks on protesters in Sunamganj on August 4 during the mass uprising.

MA Mannan, who was undergoing treatment at Sylhet MAG Medical College Hospital, returned home at around 2PM after the hospital authorities discharged him following the bail order.

Shakhawat Hossain, jailer of Sylhet Central Jail, said the bail order of Mannan reached Sylhet Central Jail in the morning. Later, it was forwarded to the hospital authority, which discharged the former minister.

Dr Saumitra Chakravarty, deputy director of the hospital, said that a six-member medical board, led by Dr Shishir Ranjan Chakraborty, professor of medicine, had been form for the treatment of Mannan at the hospital.

The former minister was suffering from hypertension and heart disease as well as diabetes, now his physical condition is stable.

Earlier, on Wednesday afternoon, Sunamganj District and Sessions Judge Md Hemayet Uddin granted bail to Mannan, the former 

Sunamganj-3 lawmaker, on a Tk 20,000 bond, considering his age and health.

On September 19, Mannan was arrested from his home in Shantiganj upazila of Sunamganj, in a case filed over attacking people during the recent mass uprising.

According to the case documents, student Zahoor Ahmad was injured n Sunamganj city on August 4 during the student movement.

Zahoor’s brother Hafiz Ahmad, a resident of Dowarabazar upazila of the district, filed the case with Sadar Model Police Station on September 2 under the Speedy Trial Act accusing 99 people, including MA Mannan.
