The government has finally approved the formation of Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Police Forces last week to provide protection to the MRT operations.
After getting approval from a secretary committee, major barriers in the formation of MRT Police Forces has been removed. MRT police unit will mainly work for the maintenance of order, safety of passengers and security of the metro rail installation. Okayed
Thus MRT police unit, a proposed specialized unit of Bangladesh Police, is going to be formed very soon for ensuring security and safety checks at every station of Metro Rail in the capital. After the final approval of the Prime Minister, the journey of the MRT Police will officially begin.
Talking to the Bangladesh Post on Sunday April 30), Md Monzur Rahman, Assistant Inspector General (Media and Public Relations) of Police Headquarters said that the Secretary Committee approved the formation of MRT Police last week.
Responding to a question of the exact time of operation of MRT Police, he hinted that the operation of MRT police will begin within this year.
After getting all necessary approvals, the new unit will start providing security of MRT passengers and it’s infrastructures. According to a highly placed source in the Police Headquarters, the journey of MRT police will start with 231 manpower initially. But later the manpower will be increased time to time considering the requirement for providing adequate safety of MRT passengers and MRT lines.
About the possible the tasks of MRT police unit, the senior police officer said that MRT police under the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) will work in the same way as MRT police work in various countries across the world. The MRT Police will work to maintain order, safety of passengers and security of the metro rail facility, he mentioned.
Earlier on December last year, DMP commissioner Kandahar Golam Farooq had mentioned that DMP will provide security of the much talked about metro rail till the specialized MRT police unit is formed.
The DMP official had further disclosed that the metro rail is very important project for public interest. This is why DMP had sent a proposal to form a separate specialized unit for providing overall security of metro rail.
Currently DMP is providing security for the MRT passenger and MRT line from DMP’s own resources.
But after formation of MRT police officially, the new specialized unit will take over the charge of MRT.
