‘Foreign countries keen to import Rajshahi mangoes’

Agriculture Minister Dr Abdus Shahid on Friday said India, China, Russia and Belarussia expressed their interest of importing mangoes from Rajshahi. A Chinese team will soon visit Rajshahi to watch the mango of the region.

The government is trying to export more mangoes. The price of mango will be fixed after talking with the team.

The Agriculture Minister came up with the assertion while he was speaking as the chief guest at an exchange of views meeting after visiting mango orchards at Kumarpur village under Godagari Upazila of Rajshahi. 

He also said the mango production is less this year and everyone should remain alert about the dishonest tricks of the syndicates.

Dr Abdus Shahid further said there should be no large difference between the demand and supply. The fair price of mango should be ensured for the farmers. No syndicate of dishonest mango traders will be allowed.

He mentioned that 250 to 300 farmers have cooperated to produce the export quality mangoes. Mango grading shades and treatment plants are being set up in Rajshahi and Chapainawabganj for exporting the seasonal fruit. 

The programme was addressed by Michael John Webster, Programme Manager of the World Bank and Zu-un Nahar Chowdhury, Managing Director of Coca-Cola Bangladesh and others.

Earlier, the Agriculture Minister visited Ratul Farm, a farm of farmer Ratul, to see the production of saplings without using soil, E-farming, vermi-compost, homestead garden and the agro farms at Sonadighi village. The Mango being cultivated using advanced technology in cooperation with the World Bank, NGO DASCO, Coca-Cola Bangladesh Limited and Syngenta. He also visited the cultivation of paddy using less water at Bijoynagar area. Various government officials were also present during the visit of the Minister.
