Folk singer Bijoy Sarker’s 120th birth anniversary today

The 120th birth anniversary of renowned Folk Singer ‘Ekushey Padak’ acheiver ‘Bijoy Sarker’  will be observed today (Sunday) in a befitting manner at his native village home Dumdi in Narail sadar upazila. On the occasion of the day, a day long programme has chalked out to mark the birth day of folk singer Bijoy Sarker. Beside,various socio-cultural organizations would celebrate his birth anniversary in a befitting manner in the region.The day-long celebration programmes will bigin with placing of floral wreaths at singer Bijoy Sarker’s portrait, Bijoygiti songs and discussion meeting held at Dumdi’s  Bijoy Sarker’s ancestral home. 

To celebrate the birth day a discussion was held on Saturday at deputy commissioner conference room. Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Md. Fakhrul Hasan presided over the meeting. President of District Bar Association and Secretary of Sadar Upazila Awami League Heroic freedom fighter Advocate Omar Faruk and Heroic freedom fighter Saifur Rahman Hilu, Banshgram Union Parishad Chairman Md. Rafiqul Islam, Principal Raushan Ali, Akram Shahid Chunnu, Nazrul Researcher HM Siraj, Former President of Narail Press Club Sultan Mahmud and others were present in the meeting. Deputy Commissioner Md. Habibur Rahman will be present as the chief guest in the discussion meeting which will be held at Dumdi tomorrow at 3:00 pm on the occasion of his birthday. Chairman of Banshgram Union Parishad Md. Rafiqul Islam will preside over the discussion meeting.

Bijoy Sarker was born at Dumdi village under Narail sadar upazila on 20 February, 1903.He wrote 1,800 songs especially Jari, Sari, Kirton,Vhajan,Vatiali which hit the headlines in the folk song world much before he was known as a singer to the people of his home land.He also wrote many poems.Leading a very simple life, the selfless singer spent most of his life completely engrossed in Harmonium, Dram, Khol and Bashi.His very simple but highly philosophic songs which revelled in nature and the people of Bangladesh,has become the prime source of inspiration for the new generation of singers.

Bijoy Sarker, a legendary singer of Bangladesh won Ekushey Padak in 2013 for contribute in folk-song.He died at Keutia in west Bengal of Kolkata on December 4, 1985.He buried there.
