Floodwater receding slowly in Mymensingh

The flood situation in Haluaghat, Dhobaura, and Phulpur upazilas of Mymensingh is improving. However, the floodwaters are receding slowly. As the water subsides, the extent of damage in the affected areas is becoming visible.

A total of 4,500 families in 32 villages of Chhandhara, Singheshwar, Phulpur Sadar, Baliya, and Rupshe unions of Phulpur upazila are still trapped in water. There is a shortage of food and clean drinking water in the flood-hit villages. However, relief is being distributed by both the administration and non-governmental organizations. 

Phulpur Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) ABM Ariful Islam said that the flood situation is improving. However, the water is receding very slowly. It is not possible to say how long it will take for the water to fully recede.

Sources from district Department of Fisheries said 89,550 farmers have been affected in Haluaghat, Dhobaura, and Phulpur upazila. Floodwaters have damaged 31,680 hectares of aman rice fields. The loss in aman rice alone amounts to Tk 313 crores. Additionally, the fisheries sector has suffered a loss of nearly Tk 85 crores due to 14,945 fish farms being submerged across the three upazilas. In Dhobaura upazila, 2,200 families are still trapped in water in 26 villages. In Porakandulia, Baghber, Goatal vilages and Dhobaura sadar, the water is gradually receding. Although the water has decreased in people's homes, it remains in the yards. Many people are still in the shelters. As the water begins to recede, the signs of flood damage are becoming visible. There is a shortage of food and drinking water for the people.

Dhobaura Upazila Nirbahi Officer Nishat Sharmin said the water is receding very slowly. In the villages, the water has receded from people's homes, but it remains in the yards. Such a situation has not occurred since 1988. It is uncertain when the water will fully recede. In this situation, relief operations are ongoing.
