Flight operations at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) will remain closed every day from 2 pm to 7 am from February 2 (today) to April 3.
Group Captain Mohammad Kamrul Islam, Executive Director of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport said, lights will be installed on the central line of the runway to increase the capacity of flight management at HSIA and increase the quality of passenger services.
For this reason, runway of the airport will remain closed everyday from 2 pm to 7 am from February 2 to April 3. A notum has been issued in this regard by the Air Traffic Management (ATM) department of the airport.
Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport will stop flight operations for 5 hours at night for the next two months. The airport authorities said that the number of flights will increase from 7 am to 11:30 am and 10 pm to 2 am due to renovation of runway lighting system.
It should be noted here that the operational activities of the third terminal of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, a mega project of the aviation sector, will start in October this year.
Chairman of Civil Aviation Air Vice Marshal Mofidur Rahman said, “The handling capacity of Terminal-1 and 2 was 8 million passengers a year. It will now be 24 million. More aircraft will come with passengers. The government expects that Bangladesh will become an aviation hub one day. We have taken up the plan to create the necessary facilities for this aviation hub”.
Group Captain Mohammad Kamrul Islam expressed his regret on behalf of the airport authorities, saying that to make the journey of the passengers smooth and uninterrupted, the airport authorities have taken plan in coordination with other public and private institutions related to the airport including flight management.
He also said, sometimes flight operations are disrupted due to thick fog in winter. To overcome that situation, the airport authorities have taken the initiative of renovation by developing the lighting system. For the next two months, the passengers may face temporary inconveniences due to the suspension of flights operation for five hours at night.
