Five cows and six goats were killed in a devastating fire that broke out in a cowshed at Shukdevkunduvillage under Ulipur upazilain Kurigram district in the early hours of Thursday.
It is believed that the flame might have originated from a mosquito coil at the farm of Aminul Islamof the village under GunaigachhUnion around 1:30am and soon engulfed the entire farm, leaving five cows and six goats dead and three more goats burnt.
Locals estimated the extent of loss from the blaze about Tk 8 lakh.
It is known that Aminul Islam, a farmer of the area, burned mosquito coils in his barn on Wednesday evening like every day, tied two bulls, two cows and a calf, nine goats there and slept at night.
Late at night, his wife saw a fire burning in the barn. Cows and goats could not get out as they were tied in the barn. The fire went out of control due to load of jute sticks on the porch of the cowshed.
Locals put out the fire after long efforts and by then everything was burnt to ashes. At that time, Aminul Islam got burnt while trying to protect the cows and goats in the herd. Currently, he is undergoing treatment at Rangpur Medical College Hospital. Nasima Begum, the wife of the affected farmer, said, “Our dreams have been burnt to ashes. We have nothing now.”
UlipurUpazila Nirbahi Officer Ataur Rahman said the incident is sad and necessary action will be taken as per the rules.
