A fisherman named Mohammed Selim, 48, died in St Martin of Cox's Bazar after suffering from chest pains and shortness of breath. He died on Tuesday morning on his way to the island hospital for treatment.
For the last three days, the fisherman was experiencing chest pain and breathing difficulties. Coronavirus panic spread among the island's inhabitants. The deceased is a resident of St Martin’s Paschim Para.
Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr Titu Chandra Shil said he was not sure whether the person had coronavirus infection in his body. However, his last rites will be conducted in the same way as a coronavirus patient.
Dr Titu Chandra Shil also informed that the people who took part in the burial process and nearby families including the deceased's family will be locked down. Later, their samples will be collected and sent to Cox's Bazar Medical College for coronavirus test.
Noor Ahmed, chairman of the St Martin's Union Council (UP) said: “The fisherman was already ill because of drug use. He had no coronavirus symptoms. Moreover, he did not leave the island or meet anyone from outside the island.”
