Five shops were gutted by fire in Karnaphuli area of Chattogram on early Saturday.
The incident took place in Moijjartek area of the area. The affected shop owners reported a loss of at least Tk 20 lakh due to the fire.
According to local sources, the fire damaged the fruit shop of Md Badshah, a mobile phone shop belonging to Md. Belal, a workshop owned by Choton, and cooling corners run by Peyar Ahmed and Nurul Akter. It is suspected that the fire started from an electrical short circuit.
Md Belal, one of the affected shopkeepers, said, I was at home at 3:00am When I heard about the fire, I rushed to my shop, but everything was already burned down. I’ve suffered a loss of over Tk 8 lakh Taka. I took a loan to open the shop, and now I don’t know what to do.
Abhi Barua, in-charge officer of Karnaphuli Modern Fire Station, said, upon receiving the news, our team reached the site and brought the fire under control within half an hour. Efforts are ongoing to assess the damage caused by the fire.
