FBCCI administrator Mohammad Hafizur Rahman on Thursday urged traders to ensure reasonable profits in order to stabilize the market for essential goods.

During a discussion, organized by the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI), at the FBCCI office in Motijheel, he addressed retailers and wholesalers dealing with essential items such as eggs, broiler chickens, onions, and potatoes.

Hafizur Rahman was presiding over the meeting.

He emphasised the need to streamline the supply chain by reducing the number of intermediaries involved in the distribution of essential goods to keep prices affordable for consumers.

Hafizur Rahman acknowledged that natural disasters like floods have caused some price increases but the current inflation in essential goods is abnormal and has created discomfort for consumers.

He urged the business community to collaborate on reducing unnecessary intermediaries to deliver goods to consumers at reasonable prices.

Abdul Jabbar Mondol, assistant director of the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection, noted that, following various measures taken by the interim government, prices of eggs and other essential goods have started to decline. He also mentioned that supply shortages are beginning to ease.

The meeting featured contributions from retailers and wholesalers of essential goods, leaders of various market associations, market analysts, and government officials.

Retailers and wholesalers called on producers and corporate entities to maintain a steady supply of essential goods, including eggs, chicken, onions, and potatoes, to help control prices.

Notable attendees included FBCCI Secretary General Mohammad Alamgir, Dr. Umme Binte Salam, Director of the Bangladesh Competition Commission, Syed Mizanur Rahman, Organising Secretary of the Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB), Haji Mohammad Majed, Vice President of the Shyam Bazar Agricultural Products Wholesale Traders Association, and Mohammad Saifur Rahman Chowdhury, General Secretary of the Karwan Bazar Wholesale Raw Market Owners Association, among other business leaders.
