Fatullah trawler capsize: 9 bodies recovered so far

A total of nine bodies were recovered after four days of a trawler capsize incident in Buriganga River at Dharmaganj ferry ghat under Fatullah police station.

Three bodies were recovered on Monday and other six bodies were recovered on Sunday.

The deceased were identified as Jesmin Akter,35, and her daughter Tasmin,15,  Sabbir, 18, Josna Begum, 33, Awlad Hossain, Motaleb Hossain, Tanim, 8, Abdullah, 24, and Samsuddin 65.

The trawler was capsized in the Buriganga River on January 5 with around 45 passengers as it was hit by a Dhaka-bound launch.

Deputy Director of fire service and civil defense Abdullah-Al- Arefin told the media that the operation to recover the missing bodies has been continuing until fulfilling the demand of bereaved family members and relatives.

At least ten passengers of the trawler went missing at Buriganga river after the trawler was hit by Dhaka-bound MV Farhan-6 launch at Dharmaganj area under Fatullah police station in the district at 8:00am on Wednesday last. A good number of passengers of the trawler managed to swim ashore. However, ten passengers went missing in the accident.

On information, the members of fire service and civil defense and the coast guard rushed to the spot and started a rescue operation. But, they could not find anybody in the first three days.

A trawler passenger, who swam ashore, Abdur Razzak, said that there were about 40 to 45 passengers in the trawler. They were crossing Buriganga river. When the trawler reached at the middle of the river, a passenger launch MV Farhan-6 hit the trawler and then the trawler sank into the river.

Babu Lal Boidya, deputy director of the security wing of BIWTA, filed a case with Fatulla police station accusing the launch driver and other two staff members. 

Police arrested the accused and seized the launch.
