A field day on ‘Intercropping with sugarcane’ using modern technology ' was held at Utholi Bus Stand with the sugarcane farmers under the Uthli unit of Chuadanga Cerew and Company Sugarcane Mills on Tuesday.
The program was organised by Bangladesh Sugar Crop Research Institute (BSRI) and funded by the National Crop Production Scheme of Spices and Vegetables. A total of 80 farmers took part there.
BSRI Director General Dr Omar Ali was present in the meeting as the chief guest. Dr Abu Taher Sohel, Chief Scientific Officer and Project Director of BSRI Dr Abu Taher Sohel presided over the programme.
Chief guest Dr Omor Ali said, “Along with sugarcane we can cultivate corn, mustard, cauliflower, cabbage, onion, garlic, ginger, tomato etc. This will increase the amount of profit in farming. It is not possible to increase the price of sugarcane every year. Plant sugarcane by planning. Cultivate vegetable-spice crops with it. It can definitely be more profitable.”
He also said that everyone should cultivate different companion crops with sugarcane as per the plan instead of cultivating the same crop.
