Farmers are busy planting Boro paddy seedlings in Chitalmari upazila of Bagerhat district. Most of the lands are already being prepared suitable for Boro cultivation. Farmers are picking saplings from the seedbed and planting them in the fields. Due to good market price of paddy and rice, the interest of farmers in agriculture has increased this year. Farmers are hopeful that they will be able to harvest the expected crop at home if the weather remains favorable.
Talking to the local agriculture office and farmers, it was learned that in the current Boro season, the target for Boro cultivation has been set at 11,779 hectares of land by using local varieties and high yielding varieties. Farmers have already started planting in these lands. Ignoring the severe winter, the farmers are going down to the field to plant saplings from the dawn.
So far, the work of planting 2750 hectares of land has been completed. The rest of the land is being planted.
Wahidul Islam Daru and Salam Munshi, farmers of Aruabarni village of the upazila, Nirmal Mandal, Shyampara village and many others said that they have had to count their losses by cultivating paddy in the past but their interest in paddy cultivation this year has increased due to
good market price.
In this regard, Upazila Agriculture Extension Officer Asim Kumar Das said, "In order to meet the targets of Boro cultivation, we are going to the field and giving various advices to the farmers. He said it's hoped that if the weather is favorable, the target will be achieved in Boro cultivation.
