More than 500 family members of 102 drug-dealers, who surrendered in Teknaf, are living with tension and anxiety during the corona crisis and the holy month of Ramadan. In two cases, these 102 drug dealers have been living in Cox's Bazar jail for the last 14 months.
These family members have sought the help of the Prime Minister in resolving the cases during the ongoing corona lockdown and during the holy month of Ramadan.
On 16 February 2019, 102 drug dealers in Teknaf formally surrendered to the Home Minister at a function in Teknaf on the instructions of the Prime Minister.
During the surrender, 350,000 pieces of yaba and 30 home-made weapons and 60 fresh cartridges were recovered from their hideouts and the drug dealers were sent to jail in two separate cases under the Narcotics and Arms Act.
It is learned that they surrendered to save their lives in the light of the government's promise to provide specific legal assistance to quit the drug dealing profession and return to normal life.
On behalf of the families of those who have already surrendered, letters have been sent to sought the cooperation of the Prime Minister, Home Minister and the IGP in withdrawing the cases during the current situation.
Meanwhile, during the Corona epidemic, there are about 5,000 inmates in the Cox's Bazar Central Jail in place of 500 inmates.
