Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-15) has arrested two youths from Ukhia Balukhali area of Cox's Bazar on charges of robbery, snatching and abduction. They were arrested around 9am on Thursday.
RAB-15 Deputy Commander Major Manzoor Mehedi confirmed the matter in a press briefing.
The arrested are Sumon Munshi and Shahid Sikder.
Major Manzoor Mehedi said that some people have been carrying out various criminal activities including extortion, looting, robbery, kidnapping and snatching at various shops in Balukhali Bazaar in Palangkhali Union of Ukhia for a long time.
He said, Sumon Munshi and his other two associates, Kashem and Shahid Sikder, abducted a Rohingya person from Thaingkhali Road in Ukhia and demanded a ransom of Tk 4 lakh from them. Victim later got released by giving a ransom of 40,000 Tk. They kidnapped people in the name of RAB ahead of Eid and RAB-15 detained them while they were committing a crime with the target of ransom of Tk 20 lakh.
During the search, 2 locally-made pistols, 2 rounds of ammunition, 2 fake RAB ID cards, 2 RAB jackets, 1 handcuffs, 2 pistol covers and 2 walkie-talkie sets were recovered. There are 6 cases against the arrested Sumon Munshi in different police stations.
The RAB official said that legal action was being taken against the detainees.
