Extremely poor people at Ukhia, Teknaf getting support to run business

United Purpose, funded by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), is working to support 3,600 extremely poor families in Ukhia and Teknaf in Cox's Bazar.

Since last January, 80 per cent beneficiaries of this project worth Tk. The remaining 20 percent is being spent on project management.

This was stated by Project Director Sunil Jiban Chakma at an accountability workshop for journalists working in print and electronic media in Cox's Bazar, Ukhia and Teknaf on the Improving Community Resilience Through Cooperative Livelihood Actions (ICRA) project at an elite hotel in Cox's Bazar on Sunday.

The workshop was inaugurated by Camp In-charge (Deputy Secretary) Hafizul Islam. Abdul Quddus Rana of Prothom Alo delivered the closing speech. Masood Rana, Head of Disaster Management and Emergency Response Unit, United Purpose, presented the documentary on the project.

At that time, he said, 1851 families formed 60 self-help groups in 8 wards of Rajapalang Jaliapalang and Palangkhali Union of Ukhia Upazila. Similarly, Teknaf Upazila has formed 73 self-help groups in Baharchhara, Sabrang, Hnila and Huaikshyang Unions and is working for the sustainable development of 1756 extremely poor families.

In addition, under the SafePlus project, these beneficiaries are provided training on business entrepreneurship and business planning development. Later, each of them was given Rs 35,000 in cash to run the business. With the money provided, auto rickshaws, furniture, computer servicing, cattle, goat rearing, ferry business, fish farming, food processing, goat rearing, grocery store, handicrafts, mobile servicing, poultry rearing, small business, sewing and garment making are cultivating vegetables.

Conducted by Assistant Project Manager Md. Shahinur Islam. Ahsan Newaz, United Purpose's Market Development and Linkage Project Officer, was in overall management.

It is worth mentioning that United Purpose is working for the development of sustainable livelihood among the local people affected by the shelter of more than 1 million Rohingyas who were displaced in Ukhia-Teknaf of Cox's Bazar in 2016.
