The Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) in Kishoreganj has taken up a massive onion cultivation scheme in 13 upazilas of the district during the current Rabi season.
According to Agriculture Office, a total of 815 hectares of land were brought under onion cultivation in 13 upazilas of the district this year with a production target of over 8639 metric tons.
Of the total target, 30 hectares of land have been cultivated in Hossainpur with a production target of 318 metric tons, 10 hectares with a production target of 106 metric tons in Kishoreganj Sadar, 265 hectares with a production target of 2,809 metric tons in Pakundia, 45 hectares with a production target of 477 metric tons in Katiadi, 85 hectares with a production target of 901 metric tons in Karimganj, 55 hectares with a production target of 583 metric tons in Tarail, 20 hectares with a production target of 212 metric tons in Itna, 45 hectares with a production target of 477 metric tons in Mithamoin, 35 hectares with a production target of 371 metric tons in Nikli, 40 hectares with a production target of 424 metric tons in Austagram, 20 hectares with a production target of 212 metric tons in Bajitpur, 35 hectares with a production target of 371 metric tons in Kuliarchar and 130 hectares with a production target of 1378 metric tons in Bhairab upazilas.
While taking to this correspondent, Deputy Director of DAE Kishoreganj Md. Saiful Alam said the local farmers are becoming interested in onion farming as they got much output and fair price of the crop in recent years.
The authorities concerned have taken adequate steps for ensuring smooth supply of fertilizers, pesticides, technical assistance and other inputs to the onion growers at grassroots level. Besides, commercial banks, other financial institutions and NGO's provided easy term agriculture loans in this connection, he added.
