Experts suggest forming banking commission

Economic analysts at a seminar on Monday opined that the country's banking sector should be kept free from the influence of various business and vested interest groups. 

They expressed need to form a separate commissions in this regard which must be constituted with honest and competent people. 

The seminar titled ‘banking sector reforms: our actions’ was organised by a forum named 'Conscious Bankers Society' at the National Press Club in the capital.

Economist and former professor of Dhaka University Abu Ahmed was present as the chief guest in the event. He stressed that it's high time to assess the actual situation of non-performing loans through an independent audits.

"Banks must be freed from family and government control. A dedicated bench of the High Court should be constituted for speedy disposal of cases related to banking irregularities", he dded.

The former chairman of the National Board of Revenue Muhammad Abdul Majid presided over while Professor Dr. Mizanur Rahman, economist and columnist presented the keynote paper in the seminar. A panel of honest and competent people should be formed by Bangladesh Bank for appointment of directors of various banks and the board of directors should refrain from interfering in the management of the bank, speakers said.

They demanded that the money launderers responsible for defaulting loans should be brought to justice. 

Former senior secretary Yunusur Rahman, former secretary Dr. M. Aslam Alam, former executive director of Bangladesh Bank Abdul Awal Sarkar, retired colonel engineer M. Alauddin, professor of law department of Dhaka University, Naqeeb Nasrullah, Senior Journalist Masood Kamal, Former FBCCI Vice President Abul Kasem Haider, Haq’s Bay leader Abdul Haque also spoke at the event.

Prof. Robayet Ferdous of Dhaka University’s Department of Mass Communication and Journalism conducted the event. Mahbubur Rahman, convener of ‘Sachetan Banker Samaj’ delivered address of welcome while banker  Dr. M Kamal Uddin Jasim offered vote of thanks.

Speakers in the seminar also said that a director of a bank cannot take loan from his own bank and at the same time should not be a director of another bank, besides the previous records to be considered seriously in appointing directors for any bank.
