Expat physician killed by ‘robbers’ in Dhanmondi

An expatriate physician, who lived in the United Kingdom, was killed and his wife injured at their house by the attack of suspected robbers at Dhanmondi of Dhaka early Friday.

The deceased was AKM Abdur Rashid, 80, and his injured Sufira Rashid, both are doctors, live in the UK.

Rashid was fatally stabbed by suspected robbers around 2:30AM in his apartment on the second floor of a five-storey building in Dhanmondi 15 under Hazaribagh Police Station. 

After hearing the scream of the victims, neighbours entered their room, and found Rashid lying on the floor, covered in blood, while his wife was pouring water on his head.

Inspector Md Faruk, in-charge of DMCH police outpost, said neighbours found Rashid critically injured and brought him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where he was declared dead around 3:45AM on Friday.

Faruk said that Rashid had multiple stab injuries on his chest and face. The body has been sent to the morgue for an autopsy.

Saidur Rahman Badhan, a tenant who take Rashid to the hospital, said Abdur Rashid and his wife visit Bangladesh each September and stayed at their Dhanmondi residence for a few months. The rest of their family also resides abroad.

They suspected that robbers entered the house to loot cash and valuables and when Rashid resisted them, the robbers stabbed him with sharp weapons, he added.

Mohammad Saiful Islam, officer-in-charge of Hazaribagh Police Station, said that they collected CCTV footage, and found there were three suspects.

He said around 3AM, Rashid was awake and praying, with the balcony door left open. The three individuals climbed up from the lawn in front of the balcony and entered the house with the intention of stealing.
