Former vice-chancellor of Comilla University professor Amir Hossain Khan, also a former teacher at Jahangirnagar University, died of pneumonia at a private hospital in the capital on Thursday morning.
He breathed his last at about 8:30am on Tuesday while undergoing treatment at the hospital, said dean of JU mathematical and physical sciences faculty professor Farid Ahmed.
He said that professor Amir Hossain Khan had been undergoing treatment at the hospital following pneumonia-related issues for the past few days.
Professor Amir Hossain Khan, 80, is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter to mourn his death.
He joined the JU physics department as an assistant professor during its inception in 1973.
He was promoted to associate professor in 1978 and to professor in 1986.
Amir Hossain served the university as the chairman of the JU physics department, hall provost, member of the university senate and syndicate body.
He was appointed as vice-chancellor of Comilla University on November 22, 2009, and successfully completed his four-year term.
He gained nationwide recognition by writing a textbook on physics for higher secondary-level students.
Meanwhile, a JU notice signed by the university registrar Abu Hasan expressed profound shock and sorrow at the death of professor Amir Hossain Khan.
The condolence message on behalf of the university family said that the death of Amir Hossain Khan was a great loss to the country’s science and research sector.
The university vice-chancellor also prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed his deepest sympathy to the bereaved family.
His namaj-e-janaza was held on the JU central field after Juhr prayers.
He will be laid to rest in Arunapalli area of Savar on Thursday evening.
