Detected Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) on Monday detained former minister and Jatiya Party (JaPa-Manju) Chairman Anwar Hossain Manju from city’s Dhanmondi area. Later, he was released on health ground.
Talking to this correspondent, DB’s joint police commissioner (North) Md. Rabiul Hossain Bhuiyan confirmed it.
The top DB official told that a team of DB police arrested Manju. He was taken to the DB office. There are five murder cases against him surrounding the Anti-discrimination Student Movement., police claimed. But credible sources told that he is named accused in a single murder case filed with the Lalbagh Police Station till filing the report at around 7:30pm.
Earlier on August 19, was filed with the Investigation Agency of the International Crimes Tribunal against Anwar Hossain Manju and others , over the murder of a student in Mirpur during the quota reform movement.
Court sources told Bangladesh Post that he yet to produce before the court.
It is mentionable that Manju is a former Member of Parliament (MP) for Pirojpur-2 seat and former water resources minister. Earlier he was the minister of two ministries, once Communications Minister and the Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister.
He was elected MP or lawmaker for six times (1986, 1988, 1991, 1996, 2001, and 2014) from Pirojpur-2 Constituency.
His wife, Tasmima Hossain, is the current editor of the Bengali daily while the couple’s daughter, Tareen Hossain is the current publisher.
