Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Hoque has been sent to jail following a remand period. A Dhaka court made the decision on Wednesday.
Shahidul was presented in court around 7:30 am after completing a seven-day remand. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ali Haider issued the jail order, according to a sub-inspector who spoke to The Bangladesh Post.
The case stems from the death of 45-year-old trader Abdul Wadud during quota reform protests in Dhaka's New Market area on July 19. Abdur Rahman, Wadud’s brother-in-law, filed the case on August 21 at New Market Police Station. The case names former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and 129 others as accused.
Shahidul was arrested in Uttara in the early hours of September 4. He faces multiple charges, including murder. Shahidul served as IGP from December 2014 to January 2018.
