Detectives of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested former Housing and Public Works Minister RAM Obaidul Muktadir Chowdhury from Mirpur area in the capital.
The arrest was made on Thursday night, but the information was revealed on Friday morning.
Reazul Karim Mallik, additional police commissioner (intelligence) of the DMP, confirmed the matter.
The former minister is an accused in several murder cases and was produced before a Dhaka court with a prayer for remand.
The Dhaka court placed former RAM Obaidul Muktadir Chowdhury on five-day remand in the murder case filed over the murder of BNP activist Mokbul.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mehera Mahbub passed the order as police produced him before the court with a 10-day remand prayer.
According to the case statement. BNP leaders and activists, as part of their party programme on December 10 in 2022 began to gather in the capital. Marking the programme, police and AL men created a ruckus in front of the BNP headquarters in Naya Paltan on December 7. They entered the BNP office, charged batons and opened fire at the BNP men, injuring Mokbul critically.
Mokbul later died from his injuries at the hospital. The case was filed on September 30, 2024, against 256 people, including ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
RAM Obaidul Muktadir Chowdhury was elected four times from Brahmanbaria-3 seat as an Awami League candidate.
He joined Bangladesh Civil Service as an admin cadre in 1983 and worked as personal assistant secretary of the then opposition leader Sheikh Hasina in 1986.
