Asif Mahtab, a former BRAC University teacher, and Arif Sohel, a coordinator of the quota reform movement and a student at Jahangirnagar University, have been placed on a six-day remand each with in the vandalism and arson at Setu Bhaban case.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Mainul Islam issued the remand order on Monday after Abu Sayeed Miah, an inspector of the Detective Branch of Police and the investigation officer, produced them before the court with a ten-day remand prayer.
Earlier on the day, both were officially shown arrested in the case despite their names were not listed in the first information report (FIR).
The defense submitted separate petitions seeking bail and cancellation of the remand, arguing that their clients were implicated to be harassed. However, the court denied the petitions and ordered the remand for further questioning.
The Detective Branch (DB) of Police detained Asif from his Dhaka residence after 1:00 am on Saturday. His younger sister Nafisa claimed that he was forcibly taken by plainclothes officers.
Similarly, Arif was picked up around 4:00 am on Sunday from his rented house near Jahangirnagar University by plainclothes men identifying themselves as DB officials, according to Arif's younger sister Umme Khair Hridi.
