Barrister Md Mehedi Hasan Chowdhury, former additional attorney general, was shown arrested on Sunday in connection with the murder of garment worker Rubel during the mass protests on August 5.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mehedi Hasan passed the order after Investigation Officer Md Abdul Malek, an inspector of Adabor Police Station, submitted an application for his arrest in the case.
Mehedi is named in the First Information Report (FIR) as an accused in the Rubel murder case.
On August 22, Rubel’s fath Rafiqul Islam, filed the case with Adabor Police Station against former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and 147 others.
According to the case statement, some of the accused allegedly participated, either directly or indirectly, in an attack on hundreds of protesting students, including Rubel, in the Ring Road area of Adabor on August 5. Rubel sustained severe bullet injuries and died in the hospital two days later.
Mehedi was arrested by Jhenaidah police on September 9 while attempting to cross the border, as confirmed by sources at Police Headquarters. He was subsequently sent to jail by a Jhenaidah court under Section 54 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), which allows the arrest of individuals suspected of specific allegations.
