EWU marks Global Media, Information Literacy Week

East West University (EWU) recently celebrated Global Media and Information Literacy (MIL) Week, joining the global effort to enhance awareness and skills in media and information literacy. Organized by the Department of Information Studies at EWU with support from Unesco Dhaka, the event spanned from Friday to Monday and aimed to boost media literacy for students and the wider community.

Throughout the week, a variety of activities took place, including awareness campaigns, rallies, seminars, and online discussions. These initiatives focused on helping participants build skills to critically evaluate information, detect misinformation and disinformation, and promote responsible digital citizenship.

The event was attended by several distinguished guests, including Professor Dr Mohammed Farashuddin, chief adviser of EWU, Dr Khalilur Rahman, Board of Trustees member, Professor Dr Shams Rahman, vice-chancellor, and Dr Susan Vize, Unesco country representative in Bangladesh. Other notable figures included Dr Md Roknuzzaman, chairman of the Department of Information Science and Library Management at Dhaka University, and Professor Dr Dilara Begum, chairperson of EWU’s Department of Information Studies.

In their speeches, the speakers highlighted the importance of media literacy in today’s digital era. They emphasized that understanding media and information literacy is vital for individuals to navigate through vast information sources, identify trustworthy content, and avoid the risks of misinformation.

This celebration reflects EWU’s dedication to promoting digital literacy and critical thinking, supporting students and the community in becoming informed and responsible digital citizens.
