Eviction drive to reclaim 5 acres BWDB land in Savar

Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) on Wednesday started to evict around 200 structures including several high rises buildings that were illegally being set up grabbing BWDB’s land in Savar, on the outskirts of the capital.

The eviction drive conducted at Bank Colony area in Savar.

Md Nahidur Rahman, Assistant commissioner (Land) of Savar and Executive Magistrate led the drive in cooperation of local police where several officials of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) were present.

Earlier Water development board authority announced to evict all the structures that were set up on the land and asked people to move away from the place for the last three days through miking.

Meanwhile, several locals including women were seen lying down before the excavator machine urged them not to demolish their house claiming the land ownership and excusing that a case was still pending to a court over the issues.

Nahidur Rahman, the magistrate said they conducted the drive following an order placed by the district administration, and they found a copy of the stay order issued by the high court for 10.5 decimal of land so they will demolish all other structures except this one.

One Jahidur Rahman said water development board forcibly evicted them from the land even in a short notice. He claimed the authority ignored even the case matter that still pending with a court over the matter.

SM Rashidul Hasan, Deputy Director of Bangladesh Water Development Board said they conducted the drive following higher authority’s direction as the land was acquired long ago, and the structures that were demolished in this drive were set up illegally occupying BWDB’s land.
