A Dhaka court has allowed police to grill ecommerce platform Evaly’s Managing Director Mohammad Rassel and Chairman Shamima Nasrin for three days in remand in a fraud case.
Metropolitan Magistrate Atikul Islam granted the remand on Friday when sub-inspector of Gulshan police Ohidul Islam produced them before the court with a plea for remand for 10 days.
Defence lawyer Barrister Moniruzzaman Asad and JR Khan Robin opposed the remand petition and sought bail for the top Evaly executives.
RAB arrested Rassel and Shamima couple from their Mohammadpur residence in a raid on Thursday afternoon.
In a briefing, the elite force said on Friday that Rassel had plan to file for bankruptcy in case of any failure in paying back the money his ecommerce company owes to customers and merchants.
RAB legal and media wing Director Khandker Al Moin said Rassel admitted during preliminary interrogation that his company owes around Tk 1,000 crore though the figure was Tk 403 crore in February.
Moin said Rassel could not give any ‘satisfactory’ reply on how he would clear the dues.
Their arrest came hours after a customer, Arif Baker, filed a case with the Gulshan police charging them with embezzling money he and his friends paid to the company for purchasing products under different sale campaigns.
