EMRCRP project improving quality of life at Rohingya Camp

Multifaceted initiatives are being taken to improve the quality of the Rohingya population’s lifestyle through the Emergency Multi-Sector Rohingya Crisis Response Project or EMRCRP of the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief. 

Through training, financial support and community activities, a role is being played in improving the quality of life of these displaced people. As part of this, the EMRCR project has trained 24 thousand 270 Rohingya refugees. 

These youths from 31 groups of the Rohingya community were given this training in disaster prevention and mitigation in a participatory manner. Besides, 64 thousand 801 Rohingya refugees were provided services and financial assistance.  Besides, under this project, 4 lakh 42 thousand 275 tree plantations, planting and maintenance of native grass area on 82 hectares of land, 1 thousand 293 kilometers (km) drainage cleaning and improvement, 6 lakh 73 thousand slopes protected, rehabilitation and maintenance, construction and maintenance of 19 meters of footpaths, bamboo bridge (shako), maintenance of 5.7 km road, compensated 73 thousand 221 persons for participation in community workfare activities. 

The EMCRP project was launched with the objective of enhancing the crisis management capacity of the Ministry of Disaster Management and other government agencies in productive activities with women-prioritized, gender-sensitive labor-oriented public works (LIPW). 

Funded by the World Bank, the project was financed by the Government of Bangladesh and the original approved cost was Tk 337.35 crore and the implementation period was from September 2018 to August 2021. 

Later, the World Bank provided a second additional financing of USD 30 million through the Safety Net System Project (SNSP) and the implementation period was extended to June 2023. 

Indicating the project’s success the project director A T M. Mahbub-ul Karim said that since August 25, 2017, about 727,000 Rohingya people were forced to flee to Bangladesh's Cox's Bazar district due to extreme violence in Myanmar's Rakhine State.
