Nathan Ellis's hat-trick and Tim David's blistering 76* in a modest chase of 136 helped Hobart Hurricanes inflict a third straight defeat on Sydney Thunder at home on Sunday.

Ellis sent back opener Matthew Gilkes in the fourth over, in a top-order collapse of 24/4 before Oliver Davies propped Thunder up with a stroke-filled 45 off 38 that was also the top-scoring effort in their innings. Ellis then returned at death and took out the well-set batter five short of his fifty and Natham McAndrew for a first-ball duck to complete his hat-trick.

He finished with 4 for 27, having bowled Ben Cutting for 16-ball 20. Patrick Dooley picked up three late wickets to clean up the tail cheaply and restrict Thunder to a modest 135 despite captain Chris Green's enterprising 21 off 18.

Hurricanes themselves were in a spot of bother at 20 for 3 by the close of the third over with Daniel Sams triggering the early collapse. David thoughever, combined with his captain Matthew Wade (30 off 22) to put on a brisk 79-run stand that resurrected the chase.

David led the way, hitting half a dozen sixes and five more boundaries in his 41-ball unbeaten knock. Sams returned to break the partnership when Hurricanes were just one short of the 100 mark and then Asif Ali in quick succession.

But David stayed until the end to wrap up the chase with a six, on the first ball of the 17th over.
