Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and Dhaka Metropolitan Police on Sunday arrested 11 people, including five members of different forces, dismissed from their posts in different times in connection with the robbery in Dhaka’s Mohammadpur Beribadh area.
RAB teams conducted drives in different parts of the capital and arrested them, RAB Law and Media department director Lieutenant Colonel Munim Ferdous told reporters on Sunday.
Of the arerstees, five of those arrested are former members of different forces, dismissed from service, while the remaining three are ordinary people, he said, without mentioning the names.
The RAB also seized Tk 7 lakh in cash, one microbus used for robbery and some jewelry from their possession, he added.
He, however, said the arrestees were being interrogated over the robbery and after that the arrestees will be handed over to police.
DMP deputy commissioner (Media) told reporters that they also nabbed three people and recovered Tk two lakh along with some jewellery and two iphones in connection with the robbery.
The arerstees are Shariful islam Tusher, Zakir Hosain and Masudur Rahman. Earlier in the day, a case was filed in connection with the robbery at a house posing as members of the Bangladesh Army and RAB in Mohammadpur Beribadh area early Saturday.
A group of 15 to 20 people wearing uniforms of the army and the RAB entered ‘Haji Vila’ owned by Abu Bakkar Siddik around 3:30am, the house owner said.
“Holding my two hands, they asked me to surrender my arms. I told them that I deposited those to the police station, I don’t have arms. They searched the entire house and looted Tk 85.50 lakh in cash, 70 tolas of gold and some mobile phone sets,” he said.
The incident occurred around 3:45am on early Saturday on the second floor of a five-storey building named ‘Abu Company Building’ near the Tin Rasta intersection.
The building belongs to a businessman named Abu, said locals.
According to the victims, a group of eight to 10 individuals dressed in uniforms resembling those of the army and RAB arrived at their home, and said they were there to conduct a raid to recover weapons.
They searched several cupboards and vandalised the furniture and looted the money and gold ornaments, victims claimed.
