Election Commissioner Rashida Sultana on Thursday said the electoral system is the biggest key to democracy.
“If the electoral system is destroyed, there will be no such thing as democracy in the country, and it will not bring any good to the people of the country. Considering this, the Election Commission has tried to conduct all the elections in a free, impartial and fair manner,” she said.
She made the remarks at a view-exchange meeting with the law enforcers and chairman candidates on the occasion of the 6th Upazila Parishad Election at Naogaon Deputy Commissioner's conference room at 11:00am on the day.
“The first and second phases of the upazila elections were held well. We want to do better in the upcoming elections so that general people can say this Election Commission can conduct good elections,” she said.
She said that the Election Commission does not work for any person’s victory and the administration has also been instructed in the same way. “They [administration] are directed to work independently. Our only objective is not to make the election questionable.”
Addressing the candidates, Rashida Sultana said the candidates should follow the code of conduct and campaign together. “You can't attack each other without reason and speak against each other. The environment should be created so that the voters come to the polling station.”
She said if any candidate reports any complaint to the Commission, they will immediately investigate the matter and take action. Calling upon those concerned with the election to maintain impartiality and fulfil their duties with devotion, she said they should perform their duties with honesty and devotion to ensure that a beautiful election system prevails and is strengthened in the country.
Deputy Commissioner Golam Mawla presided over the meeting while Additional Divisional Commissioner of Rajshahi Division Imtiaz Hossain, Additional DIG of Rajshahi Division Bijoy Basak, Superintendent of Police Naogaon Muhammad Rashidul Haque and Regional Election Officer of Rajshahi Delwar Hossain, among others, spoke at the programme.
