Election for councilor post postponed in Shailkupa for candidate’s death

The Election Commission (EC) has postponed the election of ward number 8 of Shailkupa municipality in Jhenaidah when one of the candidates died in the midnight of Wednesday. 

The authorities have also advised lawmaker of Jhenidah-1 seat Abdul Hyee not to conduct campaign for any candidate, said the returning officer (RO) of Shailkupa municipality elections 2021 Mohammad Rokanuzzaman.

The voters sin the municipality going to cast their votes amid political rivalry where two persons including a ward councilor candidate had died on Wednesday night.

Alamgir Khan Babu, son of late Jalal Khan of Kabirpur village was contesting in the municipality election scheduled on January 16 (Saturday) from ward number 8 as a councilor. His body was recovered from nearby river Kumar on Wednesday midnight. 

Returning Officer (RO) Mohammad Rokanuzzaman when contacted said the EC had postponed the election of the said position until and unless the EC decides. 

Following conducting campaign violating the electoral code of conduct by the lawmaker of Shailkupa seat Abdul Hyee, the RO said an independent candidate Toyebur Rahman Khan had filed complaint against the lawmaker as he (lawmaker Abdul Hyee) was conducting election campaign staying at Shailkupa.

He had violated the electoral code of conduct favouring boat symbol candidate, incumbent mayor Kazi Ashraful Azam on Wednesday. Following the issue, the RO said immediate after receiving the complaint from Khalilur Rahman, he had contacted the lawmaker and advised not to conduct this sort of campaign for any of the symbol or candidate.
