Most of the leaders of different political parties are busy seeking nomination for the Jhenaidah-1 constituency or parliamentary seat election in the next parliamentary polls.
Jhenaidah-1 constituency is constituted of Shailkupa upazila, 14 unions and a municipality where the number of voters is 276,334 including 138,86 males.
Parliamentarian and educationist Professor Qamaruzzaman was elected from the seat as Awami League (AL) candidate after independence in 1986, then Abdul Wahab of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) was elected on February 15 of 1991, next on June 2 in the same year. AL candidate Abdul Hyee was elected in 2001 and 2008. He was elected for the third term in 2014. He was elected in 2018 for the fourth term.
Incumbent lawmaker Abdul Hyee is the president of the ruling AL Jhenaidah unit. But the seat is very
crucial in politics as there is an acute intra-party conflict among the leaders. The conflict is known to many voters.
Different party leaders have been campaigning to win the seat as Shailkupa is the outpost in the district and most of the freedom fighters of Jhenaidah belong to this constituency. Opposition BNP leaders are not sitting idle. They have been trying to regain the seat.
Senior politician Abdul Hyee, elected for the fourth term as MP, was once again declared as the district unit president of the AL on November 13 last during the district committee conference. He has a close contact with the senior leaders of the party.
Abdul Hyee was the state minister for the ministry of fisheries and livestock in the previous tenure of the government. The senior AL leader is engaged in various development activities in cooperation with local leaders and activists. Most of the union level AL leaders and activists wish to see him elected as a lawmaker again so that the opposition could not come to power to destabilize the peace of the area.
According to the lawmaker, he had done a lot of development works in his constituency like building new roads, culvert, ICT training centre, developing structures of educational institutions, housing and opening employment opportunities for the jobless youths in the upazila.
He intends to establish a medical college to ensure medical education and better treatment for the rural people.
He has been trying to turn the existing upazila health complex into a 100-bed hospital for better treatment facilities of the area for a long time.
Parvin Zaman Kalpana, AL central committee leader and daughter of former lawmaker Qamaruzzaman wishes to seek nomination as a candidate from Jhenaidah-1 to keep the good image of her father. She is utilizing the image of her father in her campaign.
According to her, the people of the constituency is deprived of most of the facilities provided by the government. She will ensure proper distribution of the facilities and increase the beds for the common patients at Shailkupa upazila health complex. She also pledged to build a mini park in Shailkupa.
Meanwhile, Mirpur Thana Awami League general secretary, Kazi Azadul Kabir alias Azad Kazi is not far behind in the election campaigns.The dynamic and highly educated AL leader is also confident of getting the nomination from AL. He visits Shailkupa, sits with common people and progressive leaders to discuss the dynamic leadership of Sheikh Hasina to save the country from the evil forces who have been plotting to destroy the sovereignty of the country.
Nazrul Islam alias Dulal Biswas, an industrialist in Dhaka, is also a potential AL candidate for Jhenaidah -1 seat. He was the Krishak League central committee vice president. Dulal visits his house in Shailkupa and meets common people.
He is also hopeful of getting nomination from AL. If elected, he promises to end village rivalry, address corruption in public service and other offices and also address terrorism.
AL’s Jhenaidah district committee member Nayeb Ali Joarder said he will turn Jhenidah into a livable place for the rural people as he also belongs to rural area. He was the chairman of Shailkupa upazila parishad.
Nayeb Ali said he is always prepared to participate in the next national polls and hopeful of defeating any of the candidates of any party. He promises to help materialize Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s dream of Sonar Bangla.
Three times winner as the lawmaker in Jhenaidah-1 seat, Abdul Wahab intends to seek AL nomination for the seat. He said most of the development works were done during his time, while the development activities remain stalled after his departure.
He said that acute intra- party conflict will be over if the party nominates him.
BNP senior vice chairman Tareq Rahman’s human rights advisor Advocate Asaduzzaman is one of the most influential leaders in the party. He had occupied the position due to his influence. Advocate Asad has been conducting campaign among the party activists and his fellow colleagues.
The confident BNP leader said that he will stop all sorts of corruption and irregularities in public and private sectors and ensure a just society for all.
Khulna divisional organizing secretary of BNP Jayanta Kumar Kundu will seek nomination as the candidate for Shailkupa. Jayanta has been campaigning with the high profile leaders. Once a popular student leader, Jayanta Kundu wishes to address public sufferings by building more drains, roads for communications and build pipeline water supply system for drinking water.
Usman Ali, vice chairman of Shailkupa thana BNP and secretary of Krishak Dal central unit hopes to get the nomination from the party. He pledges to build a modern upazila with all modern amenities.
Jatiya Party (JP Ershad) leader Monika Alam is also hopeful of getting nomination. She promises to uphold human rights especially of women and children.
