A mobile court fined eight people Tk one lakh for illegally extracting sand and gravel in Shibganj upazila of Chapainawabganj on Monday night.
The verdict was handed down by a mobile court led by Upazila Executive Magistrate and Upazila Nirbahi Officer Shakib Al-Rabbi.
He said the raids were carried out in different areas including Panka, Wazirpur, Sattar Mor and Bahalabari on the basis of reports that a group of unscrupulous traders were illegally extracting sand from the Padma River in the name of high-level administration.
Eight people, including the owner of the sand excavating business and tractor driver, were detained during the operation. During this time, various equipments used for illegal sand-extraction were seized from them. They were later produced before the mobile court and fined.
