Eight anti-aggression pillars will be rebuilt in memory of Abrar Fahad on October 7, to honour his fight for sovereignty and democracy. Abrar was a student at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), who was brutally murdered by Chhatra League members on October 6, 2019, following his Facebook post criticizing an agreement between Bangladesh and India.
Akhtar Hossain, Member Secretary of the National Citizens Committee and a former DSU Social Services Secretary, made this announcement through a Facebook post on Wednesday (October 2).
In 2020, the first anti-aggression memorial pillar was constructed at the Palashi intersection, but it was later demolished by Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC). These eight new pillars will represent important values such as sovereignty, democracy, communal harmony, protection of rivers and forests, economic self-reliance, cultural freedom, and human dignity.
Abrar’s tragic death sparked nationwide outrage, leading to a legal case. On November 13, 2019, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DB) submitted a charge sheet accusing 25 individuals. The court sentenced 20 to death and five to life imprisonment on September 15, 2020.
The pillars stand as a reminder of the values Abrar stood for and the ongoing struggle for justice and freedom in Bangladesh.
