Senior lawyer and former Dhaka Metropolitan Public Prosecutor, Ehsanul Haque Shomaji, has been appointed as the new Public Prosecutor of Dhaka Metropolitan.
He previously served as the Public Prosecutor for two years during the tenure of the caretaker government. He succeeded Advocate Abdullah Abu, who had been appointed during the tenure of the Awami League government.
This information was announced in a notification signed by Deputy Solicitor Mahroof Hossain from the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs. The notification stated that the appointment order of Md. Abdullah Abu, who was appointed as the Public Prosecutor in the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court on January 28, 2009, has been revoked.
Mr Ehsanul Haque Shomaji is a reputed Criminal Law Practitioner and Consultant of the High Court Division of Bangladesh Supreme Court.
He also served as Metropolitan Public Prosecutor, Dhaka during last care-taker government for the period 2007-2009 and Public Prosecutor of Anti-Corruption Commission, Bangladesh. During his tenure he represents the State/Prosecution and conducts all case(s) before the criminal court(s) and most of the cases were treated as sensational one.
Mr Shomaji has obtained LL.B (Honours) and LL.M from Dhaka University in 1984 and 1985 respectively and enrolled as an advocate on 30 October, 1986 and got the membership of Dhaka Bar Association on 4 November, 1986. While practicing in subordinate court(s), he achieved the permission to plead before the Hon'ble High Court Division of Bangladesh Supreme Court on 07 April, 1988 and subsequently got the membership of Supreme Court Bar Association on 21 January, 1992.
Mr Shomaji has conducted a good number of criminal cases including some sensational cases from time to time throughout the country. He felt encouraged to practice as a Criminal Practitioner and achieved recognition and as a result he become the Legal Consultant of a good number of companies incorporated in Bangladesh. He was part-time Faculty of Eastern University and teaches Trial and Advocacy (criminal) skills till 2018. Presently he deals with criminal trials in so many cases pending before the Court of Sessions/Special Judge Court/ Tribunals.
