Workers of EGPP-Plus project brought out a procession demanding their due wages in Ulipur upazila on Thursday.

Around 2,000 labourers brought out the protest procession that paraded the main roads that ended in a rally held on the Upazila Nirbahi Office (UNO) office premises amid rain. Then they submitted a written memorandum to the UNO in support of their demands.

About 5071 labouers were selected from 13 unions under Employment Project (EP-Plus). They had started soil digging from February 18 of the current year. The wage was fixed at Tk 400 per day for each labourer. The duration of work was fixed 110 days in two terms. But it ended after 77 days.  The duration of time is not the same in all unions.  The labouers got only 46 days’ wages.  After six months they are yet to get the remaining dues.

According to the workers Nuruzuzzamna Mia, Shahzahan Ali Abdul Baten and Mohubur Rahman, 5071 labourers worked in the project. They all got only 46 days’ wages. The workers had no holiday.

All the workers went to local chairmen and members to get their dues. But the high government officerals also failed to give justice to the poor day-labourers.

Sirajud Daula, Project Implementation Officer (PIO) informed that he will talk to the higher authorities to solve the matter.

Ataur Rahman, UNO said that the labourers came to me. I will take action after investigation into the matter and according to the rule.
