The Ministry of Education has created a committee to address the academic and administrative challenges faced by seven government colleges affiliated with Dhaka University (DU). Initially under the National University, these colleges were affiliated with DU in February 2017, resulting in a range of issues affecting students and faculty.
The committee, led by the Additional Secretary (College) of the Secondary and Higher Education Division, includes members from the University Grants Commission (UGC), representatives from Dhaka University, National University, the Joint Secretary (University) of the Education Ministry, and the principals of each of the seven colleges. The Deputy Secretary of the Secondary and Higher Education Department (Government General University) will serve as the member secretary, with the option to add more members if needed.
The colleges involved are Dhaka College, Eden Women’s College, Government Shaheed Suhrawardy College, Kabi Nazrul Government College, Begum Badrunnesa Government Women’s College, Mirpur Government Bangla College, and Government Titumir College. Each of these institutions faces specific issues that students and faculty have raised over time.
The committee has been given six weeks to investigate and propose solutions to improve the educational and administrative conditions of these colleges. Meanwhile, students from the seven colleges continue to hold protests, advocating for a fully autonomous public university dedicated to their institutions. They believe an independent university would better address their unique needs. Forming this committee is viewed as a government step toward resolving these ongoing challenges and responding to student demands.
