Previously famous for paddy production, Dinajpur has now established a reputation for being one of the largest mango and litchi yielding districts in the northern region.
Recently, mango buds have bloomed in around 13 Upazilas of the district. The sweet smell of mango buds is spreading everywhere. For this, honeybees around the area seem busy collecting nectar from the buds. Due to the massive blooming of mango and litchi buds, farmers in the area are hoping a bumper yield this year.
Local mango farmers in the area said that they have been spending busy time using organic pesticides to reduce insect infestation. Moreover, they are taking a very good care of their mango and litchi trees.
Usually, Fazli, Lengra, Amrapali, Mishrivog, and a couple of other variants are being yielded in the area. They are tending the farms to get better yield, they added. Mango farmer Badhan Kumar from Dinajpur Sadar area said, “Dinajpur has seen bumper yield of mango buds this year. Any sort of insect infestation hasn’t occurred in the area yet. If natural disasters like tornado or hailstorm doesn’t hit the areas this year, the farmers can get a bumper production of mango and litchi.”
Last year, I sold mango worth 7 lakh taka from a garden of 15 bighas. This year, I have a 20-bigha mango garden. Many farmers from the area are now leaning into mango cultivation instead of cultivating traditional crops, he added.
Additional Director of Dinajpur District Agricultural Extention Md. Touhidul Islam said, “Dinajpur produces a large portion of mango due to its soil quality. As mango buds have bloomed early this year, bumper yield can be achieved.”
